LIFE SIZE DRAWINGS
Stick a load of A4 sheets of paper together (or if you have a big paper roll even better!) and place it on the floor. Encourage the kids to lie down on it and outline their body with a pen. From this moment on there is no way to stop the kids getting creative: colour in, add accessories to the figures like stickers or stamps, design clothes with old material offcuts or other things you might find in the art drawer. Design a football kit or a prom outfit. The kids will have lots of fun with the real-size copies and you may have something really special to decorate their bedroom wall afterwards. Don't forget to send photos of your drawings in to admin @stmary (full address above)
Tongue-twisters are phrases that are designed to be challenging to say. Kids are encouraged to repeat each saying as many times as possible, as quickly as possible, without making a mistake. But enjoy the slip-ups… Tongue twisters are meant to be fun for the whole family!

Thursday 9th july
When we do something wrong and then later feel sorry about it, we want to make up for it in some way. This is a sign that we will try to do better in the future. The priest gives the person a penance to fulfil. Sometimes it is a prayer to say or sometimes the priest might ask the person to do something extra. Then, after the person prays an Act of Sorrow, the priest raises his hands as a sign of God’s love and says the words of forgiveness and absolution. He asks God to forgive and absolve the person from their sins. To be absolved of sin means to be free from sin. Those sins are no longer part of your life. This is what the priest says:
This sacrament is a special way to experience God’s love and peace. The person usually stays in church or in a quiet place to say their penance, if it is a prayer. They will thank God for this opportunity to experience his love and forgiveness and promise to try to do better.

There are two different ways of celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Rite 1 and Rite 2.
In Rite 1, individuals will make their Confession to the priest. Before they do that, they will have prayed and thought carefully about their life, have contrition and want to make a new start. They will tell the priest their sins and listen carefully to his advice.
Sometimes Rite 2 of the Sacrament of Reconciliation is used. This often happens in Advent and Lent when people gather together to prepare for the feasts of Christmas or Easter. In Rite 2, a number of people come together for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, often with a few priests who have come from neighbouring parishes. There is a service of prayers and readings, which help people to prepare. They are then invited to make a personal confession to one of the priests available. Sometimes schools will have a Penitential Service with the opportunity for confession, Rite 2. Whatever a person talks to the priest about is in absolute confidence. They can feel that they are talking to God alone. When the confessions are finished, the priest invites everyone to thank and praise God for his mercy and forgiveness.
Remember rite means ritual or ceremony, a way of doing things.

RE - The Sacrament of Reconciliation: contrition
.The Sacrament of Reconciliation is also called Confession, Penance and Sacrament of Forgiveness. This Sacrament has been given to us to confess or acknowledge our sins, seek forgiveness and be reconciled to God and one another. It is like a bridge. It helps Christians to live as followers of Jesus, knowing that forgiveness leads to joy and peace. In this sacrament, those receiving it may be sure of the love and mercy of God.
The most important thing that people preparing to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation need is to be sorry for their sins. There is a special word for this – ‘contrition’. When you have had a quarrel with someone, you can never make up unless you are really and truly sorry – that is, if you have contrition. It about realising the consequences of what you have done, the hurt you have caused to others, as well as to yourself. When you have contrition, you will try very hard not to sin again and there will be peace in your heart.
So if you are about to offer your gift to God at the altar and there you remember that another has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar, go at once and make peace with that person, and then come back and offer your gift to God.Matthew 5: 23-24
Take time to pause and reflect. Write your own prayer of sorrow to God. It is called an Act of Contrition.

RE - Sin and Examination of Conscience.
People get lost when they deliberately do something wrong, hurting others, themselves or the world they live in. That is what is called ‘sin’. It is anything deliberately chosen – to think, say or do. It is also anything you choose to do or not to do that spoils or breaks the friendship with God and with other people. Sin is anything which breaks bridges of love.
When Jesus was teaching, someone came up to him and asked him what he thought was the greatest commandment of all. This is what Jesus replied: “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.” The second most important commandment is this: “Love your neighbour as yourself.” There is no other commandment more important than these two. Mark 12: 30-31
Christians try to build bridges towards one another every day. They ‘examine their consciences’ to see how they have kept these two commandments. Our conscience is like a voice or feeling inside us. This is the Holy Spirit helping us to respond to God. If we pay attention to the Holy Spirit, it will help us to know if something is good or bad. It is good to think every evening, before you go to bed, about how you have built bridges of love and friendship or, perhaps, broken them through sin. We remember if we have done something that hurt someone else or if someone else has hurt us. We can thank God for all the good and say sorry for the bad and know that God, like the good shepherd, cares about us and loves us. We also must try to forgive those who have hurt us.

.A bridge needs to be built from both sides. A bridge must be strong enough for people to walk on. Bridges span or stretch across things. A bridge needs to be cared for and looked after otherwise it will just fall down.
A bridge of friendship
When I started school, I met Charlotte. She was standing by a table looking shy. I said, “Hello I’m Poppy!” and she said, “Hello!”.We were friends from then on. We sat at the same table to do our work. We both liked ICT best in school and we worked on it together. Charlotte is good at art so she helped me, I’m good at science so I helped her. We shared jokes and laughed together. We were also friends with Lucy and Will. I liked Charlotte, but then things changed. Charlotte went and sat by Emily one day to share her new book. I thought she would come back and sit by me, but she didn’t. At playtime, she stayed with Emily and I played with Lucy and Will. I wondered how I could build a bridge of friendship to Charlotte.
A friendship is like a bridge between people- it needs to be strengthened, maintained or repaired.

Today, Monday 22nd June, is Windrush Day is - a time to offer our gratitude and respect to the people of Windrush. It is also a time to recognise the challenges and inequalities they faced as they came to help rebuild England.

Raymond Kolbe was born in Zdunska-Wola, Poland, in 1894. He came from a poor Catholic family and his parents were weavers. His parents taught Raymond to love Jesus, that Jesus was his friend. Raymond worked hard at school he especially loved maths and science. He was interested in space travel and designed a space rocket. This was long before any such thing existed.
He thought and prayed about his life; should he be a scientist or not. Eventually he knew that God was asking him to follow him in a special way. He joined the Franciscans and took the name of Maximilian. He was ordained as a priest in 1918.
Father Maximilian wanted everyone to know and love Jesus and he had a very special love for Mary the mother of Jesus. He started a centre near Warsaw in Poland where people could find out more about the Good News of Jesus. He opened a printing shop where he produced a monthly magazine to send out to people. He knew that a lot of people listened to the radio so he started a radio station, which broadcast prayers and information about the Catholic faith. Father Maximilian was using his gift of understanding science and technology to help people become friends of Jesus.
All this was happening at about the same time as Adolf Hitler and his Nazis were trying to take over Europe. They did not like anyone who was trying to do good. In 1939 Father Maximilian was arrested by the Gestapo; that is a particularly cruel section of the Nazis’ group. They questioned him and released him. He returned to his Friary, where he and the other friars sheltered 3000 Polish people and 1500 Jewish people. During this time he continued to publish his magazine to encourage people to put their trust in God who would be always with them no matter what happened.
In 1941 he was arrested again and taken to Auschwitz concentration camp. This was a terrible place the prisoners were very badly and cruelly treated, they were not given enough to eat, were often beaten and lived crowded together in wooden huts.
In spite of the terrible conditions Father Maximilian would say Mass, with bread and wine that had been smuggled into the camp. He encouraged people to be loving and forgiving, to try to overcome evil with love and goodness. Father Maximilian was well known in the camp for his kindness he always put other people first and took what was left over.
One day a man in Father Maximilian block escaped. As a punishment the guards made all the prisoners stand still outside all day in the sun without food or water, whilst they searched for the escaped man. They did not find him so at the end of the day the camp Commandant said he would kill ten men in place of the one who had escaped. One of those chosen begged to be spared because he had a wife and family at home. Father Maximilian stepped forward and said that he would take his place, and asked the Commandant to spare the man. His offered was accepted.
The condemned men were put into a cellar and starved to death. Father Maximilian tried to comfort the others; they said the Rosary and sang hymns. Father Maximilian died in 1941 on August 14th eve of the feast of the Assumption of Our Lady into Heaven. On October 10, 1982, Pope John Paul II canonised him Saint Maximilian Kolbe, a martyr.

RE - What happens at the Sacrament of Reconciliation
Read the 7 steps below.
1 The penitent (person confessing his/her sins), takes time to examine their conscience (life). This means to think about the times they have not followed Jesus’ way of love and kindness.
2 The priest welcomes the penitent, and they both make the Sign of the Cross.
3 The penitent confesses (tells the priest his/her sins).
4 The priest talks kindly to them and encourages them to do or say something to make up for what they have done wrong. This is called a penance.
5 The person then prays an act of sorrow, which includes the promise to try not to do the same again.
6 The priest says the words of forgiveness and absolution.
7 The person leaves the priest and prays and thanks God for forgiving them and completes the penance the priest has asked them to do.
Make a ‘Reconciliation’ booklet to help a person understand the different steps, words and actions in celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation and what they mean. ( If you are unsure of how to make a booklet Google it)

RE - The Sacrament of Reconciliation
One of the more formal ways of saying sorry to God is through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. It is sometimes called Confession or Penance. It is in this Sacrament that Christians celebrate God’s love and mercy. It helps them to think about their lives and how they are following Jesus and it gives them the opportunity to make a new start.
1 To recognise and admit purposeful wrongdoing.
2 To say sorry and ask forgiveness for the wrongdoing and really mean it.
3 To make up in some way for the hurt and harm caused.
